Enjoying Your Outdoor Living Area in the Fall

Thinking of ways to get the most of your backyard this fall?  Whether you are considering revamping your existing outdoor living area or are planning to build it from scratch, these tips below will help you create the perfect fall-friendly outdoor living space.

Invest in your Furniture

Your outdoor furniture is going to take a beating.  Sun, snow, rain and wind can quickly make inferior quality outdoor furniture look weathered and worn.

When exploring your outdoor furniture options, look for basic sets which are made from heavy and durable materials.  You can dress up this furniture with less expensive elements to make it look more engaging, such cozy blankets and soft, supple pillows.

Create a Cover

Covering your outdoor seating area will not only provide you with much needed shade in the summer months; it will also help you keep in the heat when the temperatures start to drop.  A cover such as a pergola or a large and sturdy umbrella will go a long way in keeping you comfortable while outdoors this fall.

Heat Up the Night

Apart from having comfortable outdoor furniture, nothing will tempt you to embrace the cooler evenings and encourage you to venture outdoors than a fire feature.  Fire pits are one of the most popular fire features as they are versatile and can be custom built to suit the atmosphere of your outdoor living area.  Other popular fire features include:

  • Fireplaces

  • Fire bowls

  • Fire lanterns

  • Fire cauldrons

Consider a Kitchen

If you are planning on doing a lot of outdoor entertaining this fall, consider going beyond the barbeque and having an outdoor kitchen built.  This not only encourages guests to stay outside and enjoy your beautiful backyard, but it expands your living space.

Pool Design Ideas for the Late Summer and Fall

Pool owners often forgo renovating and remodeling their poolscape during summer for one simple reason – they want to be able to use their pool.  This is why many pool owners choose to redesign their pool in late summer and fall.

If you're hoping to change up your backyard oasis but aren't sure what to do, here are some ideas to get you started.

Add a Water Feature

The late summer and fall months is when you will be able to find pool equipment and accessories at near rock bottom pricing.  This makes it the perfect time to incorporate a water feature such as arching jets, bubblers, waterfalls and scuppers you have always dreamed of to your pool.

Another benefit to adding these at this time of year? Business will be slowing for many pool renovation and remodeling companies.  This means that they will be keeping their prices lower in order to remain competitive with other pool design companies.

Get the Spa You Always Wanted

It may be a bit too chilly to take a dip in the pool, but it is never too chilly to enjoy a relaxing soak in a spa.  If you have been dreaming of adding a spa to your poolscape, late summer and fall is the perfect time to do it. Spas are able to be enjoyed year round, and are especially enjoyable soaking in the warm water with the crisp air all around.

Create a Recessed Lounge

One of the hottest trends is having a recessed lounge area right in your pool.  This unique and ultra chic pool feature allows everyone to be in the pool together – even those who don't want to get wet.
For those who are looking for in-pool seating that does not take up nearly as much space, consider sunken loungers on a baja shelf or installing pool bar stools near the outdoor kitchen or barbeque area.

Choosing the Right Pool Safety Cover

Swimming Pool Covers NW Arkansas, Oklahoma & Mississippi

Safety is, and should be, your number one concern when you own a pool and have children. And the most important thing you can do as a pool owner is properly outfit your pool with the right kind of safety cover. There are a variety of options on the market that fit different types of pool and your different needs.

Automatic Pool Covers

Automatic pool covers are the easiest to operate as they go off and on with the simple push of a button. This solid cover is usually best for rectangular or square-shaped pool and is built into the pool system so it remains hidden when not in use. This type of cover is rarely used for kidney-shaped, oval or circular pools. It's solid nature will keep out debris.

Pool Safety Net

A pool safety net is strictly used to keep out children and not beneficial in keeping out any type of debris. This type of cover is anchored to the sides of the pool and does require two people to apply.

Mesh Pool Covers

Mesh pool covers are most often used on pools that are closed for the winter because they allow weather like rain and snow to drain into the pool rather than collect on top of the cover. This is also beneficial for safety because this type of cover won't allow water to pool on top of the cover causing a puddle that could pose a safety hazard.

Solar Pool Covers

Lastly, solar covers are the least expensive and look like a giant sheet of bubble wrap. This type of cover usually requires two people to operate and does a good job keeping the heat in and the debris out. A major concern with this type of cover is that it does have a history of causing entrapment and drownings.

A Simple Guide to Above Ground Pool Care

Owning and maintaining a pool requires a certain level of responsibility and upkeep from every homeowner, and this is especially true for above ground pools. It is true that spending your weekends poolside is a great way to unwind from the week; however, your day off can become not so relaxing if your pool is not properly kept or maintained. A well-kept above ground pool means that your pool will have healthy, clean, and clear swimming water as well as longer lasting equipment. Check out this easy guide for above ground pool care so you can make the most out of your time spent at the pool this summer.

Water Balance

The first thing to be sure of when maintaining an above ground pool is the water pH level. You want to make sure that the water's pH is not too acidic (low pH) or too alkaline (high pH). Your pool water should also have the right calcium hardness and total alkalinity levels. By ensuring these levels are correct, your pool's water will be properly balanced. The right balance levels will ensure proper functioning of your sanitizer system which keeps bacteria at bay. This will also lower the risk of corrosion or scale buildup on your pool and equipment. And for your comfort, balanced pool water also makes the water feel smoother and more comfortable to swim in and prevents skin and eye irritation.

Water Sanitation

The next step for a healthy above ground pool and proper care is having and maintaining a well functioning sanitizing system. Sanitizer systems prevent algae buildup and destroy bacteria. To sanitize your pool, you can either go with traditional chlorine products or other alternatives that are just as effective. These alternative products are becoming a lot more popular as people are preferring less chlorine exposure. Whichever you choose, it is still necessary to ensure proper pool water sanitation for yourself and your family.

Pool Shocking

If you have a chlorine pool, periodic shock treatments are necessary for maintaining pool water health. When a pool with chlorine is used, compounds called chloramines are formed when the pool's chlorine mixes with outside contaminants. When combined, the chlorine no longer has its sanitizing ability and actually causes a strong chlorine odor, red eyes, cloudy water, and algae and bacteria growth. Shock treatments break down the chloramine compounds and oxidizes the outside contaminants which will keep your pool safe and healthy.

Periodic Pool Cleaning

Last and definitely not least, the best and most obvious way to keep your above ground pool healthy and ready for use is with periodic cleanings. Making sure your pool is clear of dirt, debris, and other unwanted materials is vital to maintaining proper water quality. Keeping your pool clean also means taking good care of the filtration system.

Burton Pools and Spas

A clean pool is a safe pool, so be sure to keep safe this summer by properly maintaining your above ground pool. Find out how Burton Pools and Spas can help you have fun and be safe this summer with a new above ground pool and regular pool maintenance.

Preparing Your Pool for Summer Swim Season

For many of us in Fort Smith and Springdale, it already feels like pool season is underway. With increasingly longer and warmer days ahead, it's about time to get your home pool in shape before everyday use becomes a necessity. Since it's likely been a while since your last dip, there are a few things you should do to prepare a pool for summer. Even if you had it covered all winter, it's likely not ready for swimmers just yet. Here are some of our top ways to prep your Arkansas pool for summer use.

Basic Cleaning

Spring is a great time to make sure your Arkansas pool cleaning process is up to snuff. After removing your winter pool cover, give it a once-over; if there's any debris in your pool, clear it out with a skimming net. This will help you get rid of any visible debris, such as leaves, twigs and bugs. Remove everything from the pool that you possibly can. Then, go over the sides and floor of your pool with a pool brush to loosen up any algae or other dirt and buildup.

Skimming and brushing will prepare your pool for the underwater vacuum, which cannot remove any large items. However, running a pool vacuum is a very low maintenance way to keep your pool in shape, and you should run it once per day. Also, be sure to clean out the straining baskets whenever any debris has built up. The more often you clean your pool, the less time each cleaning session will take.

Maintain Water Levels

Your pool's water level naturally fluctuates, but it's important to keep the pool full of water at all times. During particularly hot stretches of the day or when the pool is being used frequently, your Arkansas pool will continue losing water. Keep the water level above the skimmer line by refilling your pool with a hose if necessary.

Regularly Check the Filter

In addition to regularly cleaning your pool, you should also be regularly cleaning your pool's filter. Do this by switching the filter to “backwash” mode as often as your manufacturer's guide says to (which may not be too often and depends on the type of filter you use-consult the manual before running!).

Check Chemical Levels

We use chlorine in pools to keep bacteria from surviving and reproducing. However, too much chlorine can be harmful and affect the color in your family's hair and swimsuits. Checking the pH balance on a frequent basis-at least once a week-is an essential part of being a responsible pool owner. Regularly go over the pool rules with family members or anyone else using the pool; these rules include only swimming in pools that have been recently chlorine-tested.

At Burton Pools, we're luckily offering specials on many must-have pool chemicals. Starting May 7th and lasting through the 31st, you'll find the following deals:

New Owner's Guide to Hot Tubs

Burton Pools is proud to represent Hot Spring Spas, a world leader in start of the art, low maintenance hot tubs, and if you're reading this guide, you're hopefully already on your way to taking the plunge and investing in a hot tub for your home. Just buying one, however, is only half the battle.

You need to know a few things if you're going to be a responsible hot tub owner, but don't worry! Our hot tub guide will cover all the basics, and as long as you have a working knowledge of the information printed here, you should very soon be enjoying the comfort of your brand new hot tub.

Cleaning To Ensure Your Tub Time Is Perfect

The role of the filter is to keep your hot tub clean, but you'll still want to physically go over the hot tub from time to time to make sure you're keeping it free of germs. You will especially want to stay on top of the cleanliness of the waterline of your hot tub, in addition to any other above-water parts. About twice a month, you'll want to scrub it down thoroughly to remove scum buildup.

Every few months, you will also want to drain the hot tub completely and scrub the whole interior. At the same time, make sure to regularly remove the hot tub's filters and clean those out as well.

Maintenance to Keep Your Tub Lasting Long

Hot tub filters work by cycling the total volume of water through the filter at a certain rate. In order for the filter to be considered functional, it should perform this cycling at least once a day. When you clean the filter, be sure to always keep an eye out for potential blockages or other damages that could be disrupting this cycle.

You will also need to constantly check the hot tub's pH levels to make sure the water is at a manageable and safe level. This is especially important since failure to maintain proper pH could result in bad skin reactions, which is the last thing you want to deal with in your personal hot tub. Improper pH levels can also lead to bacterial growth, which can in turn lead to illness, so make sure you stay on top of things.

Safety First, Everyone!

Just as it is with pools, safety is of the utmost importance with hot tubs, and if you're going to make the commitment of purchasing and using a hot tub, you need to be responsible and safe.

First thing's first: it is possible to drown in a hot tub, and as such, you should never bathe alone. If minors are using the hot tub, an adult should always be there to supervise them. You should pay particularly close attention to submerged suction vents, as these can catch hair or cloth and trap you underwater.

It should also go without saying that you need to keep electrical devices away from your hot tub-this includes active outlets. In addition, be mindful of the temperature of the water, and don't spend more than 10-15 minutes bathing at any given time. Avoid drugs, alcohol and other psychoactive substances while you're at it.

So, What's Next?

Now that we have the technical information from our hot tub guide out of the way, ask yourself: do you still want a hot tub? The answer should undeniably be “Yes!” Let's face it-there aren't many better ways to enjoy an evening quite like relaxing in a hot tub. You've probably always dreamt about it, so now let's make it a reality.

Need more convincing? Through April 11, Burton Pools is offering an amazing Hot Springs Spas financing event by allowing a zero percent APR for 36 months on select models. You can't really beat that deal, so contact us today!

4 Signs It's Time for an In-Ground Pool Remodel

Is your pool trying to send you a message that you just aren't receiving? Maybe you are wondering if it's time to get your in-ground pool remodeled, but you aren't sure. There are plenty of signs that it is time for you to get some work done on your pool. Here are four of them!

Repairs and More Repairs

Do you find that every time you head out to swim you notice that something else on your pool has broken? Maybe you just found that your pool water level is dropping due to a small (or large) leak. All of these can lead you to spending a large amount of money on repairs.

Pools are made of and run on mechanical systems. If one system keeps failing over and over, or several systems are starting to fail, it may be a sign that you need to replace them. Having your pool remodeled can end up saving you money in the long run.

Update that Look

Are you starting to feel like your back door is a portal back in time? When you step out onto your patio, do you expect to hear last decade's hits playing over the radio? A dated look is a good sign that your pool needs a remodel.

Trends change over time. Looks that were in all of the magazines lose favor. Don't keep spending time in your dated pool. Now is the time to bring it up to date.

Worn and Used

If you enjoy using your pool, then it probably sees a lot of wear and tear. Even if you don't spend a lot of time in it, the sun, weather and seasons can put a toll on your once beautiful pool. The colors fade, the lights don't light up as bright and the patio starts to chip and crack.

Remove the signs of wear and tear by having a full remodel done. You can breathe life and fun back into your pool with a simple update or go for a full overhaul to change the look entirely.

More Is Better

Did you have to make some compromises when you had your first pool installed? Now that you are in a better position, maybe it is time to have that old pool made bigger or redesigned.

Upgrading the size or even the shape of your pool is a great reason to have your pool remodeled, particularly if you find yourself trying to host large amounts of people with a smaller pool. You want to have enough room for all of your guests to enjoy themselves. This can become a big problem if your children start bringing friends over.

Have your pool remodeled to accommodate more people, or have your patio or deck updated for more space!

What to Expect During Gunite Pool Construction

So you have taken the leap and decided to get a swimming pool for your Fort Smith or Springdale home. Maybe you are still on the fence and would like to know more about the process. Either way, knowing what to expect during the installation of your swimming pool is natural. It is going to take a few weeks at least, maybe longer depending on how construction goes. Here is what you can expect during construction.

Prep for Pool Installation

The first thing that is going to need to be done is acquiring all the appropriate permits. While that is going on, your local pool professionals may come and take a look at the ideal location for the pool. They will then measure out the area that the pool is going to be in and rough out the outline of the pool using stakes.

If you have a fence, it will need to be removed while the construction is going on. Remember to be clear about who is removing the fence and who is going to replace it. Burton Pools is happy to take down fences, however, the customer is responsible for putting it back up.

Excavation

Now it is time to dig. Please remember that once digging has begun, the area is an active construction site. Children and pets can watch from a distance but should be kept away from equipment and the site itself, as it can be dangerous.

Heavy equipment will be brought on site to do the heavy digging. Most of the dirt will be hauled off site, but some needs to be kept around for later. This may mean that you have a small dirt mountain in your backyard for a short period of time.

Yes, all of this construction is going to take a toll on your yard, but don’t worry – it will look great again before you know it.

Drains and Framing

Once the excavation is done, it is time to put in gravel drainage. This will be done by a loader bringing in large amounts of gravel and dumping it into the hole. The gravel will then be smoothed out so that a rebar frame can be built over top of it.

Finally, the plumbing for the pool will be partially or fully installed (depending on the job).

Pouring Gunite and Tile

Once the frame is in place, gunite can be shot into the frame. This is the material that your pool is made of and is a special form of concrete. It can be a little messy, but your installers will clean it all up before they leave.

Once the gunite installed, the tile or other surface material will be placed over the top of it to give your pool a finished look. Any patio or decking that is going to go along with it will be completed at this time as well.

The Benefits of Above Ground Pools

Spring is just around the corner, and now is the time to start thinking about that swimming pool you’ve always wanted to install in your Arkansas yard. There’s a lot of things to consider when you enter the process, and perhaps the biggest decision is whether to put in an in-ground or above ground pool? Above ground pools carry many advantages and shouldn’t be discounted. Learn about the benefits of above ground pools and why you can get a lot of enjoyment from this cost-effective recreation.

Cost Benefits of Above Ground Pools

Cost is probably the biggest of the benefits of above ground pools. It can save you thousands of dollars over the excavation and process of building one in the ground.

Easy Install

Going hand-in-hand with cost, above ground pools are a lot easier and faster to install. They don’t involve major excavation, digging or underground plumbing. They go up around a frame after the ground undergoes basic leveling, grading and settling.

Easy to Place

When you go with an in-ground pool, you’ll need to find the right location. You have to worry about hitting underground gas or water lines, and place it just right. There are far more potential locations for above ground pools which also come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.

Take It with You

That’s right—above ground pools are portable! If you move to a new home, you can break down your pool and take it with you to your new space, where it can be erected again.

Safety

Since above ground pools rise up off the ground, they can be easier to secure against accidents. It’s very easy for a child to fall into an in-ground pool, but they have to climb up on the deck to get into an above ground one, which is tough if you disconnect the ladder or fold up and lock the steps. It’s an extra level of security.

Cheaper to Maintain

Above ground pools are a lot easier to maintain than in-ground ones. They require the same chemicals and filter, but since they tend to be smaller, you’ll use less chemicals, a smaller filter and less water.

Less Space

Again, since above ground pools tend to be smaller than in-ground ones, they take up less space in the yard, leaving you with more usable space for that outdoor kitchen-patio, playing catch, gardening or engaging in other recreational activities.

Tax Breaks

An above ground pool isn’t considered a permanent addition to your home. What this means is that while it will increase the market value of the home (especially if you intend to leave it when you move), it may not affect your assessed value. You won’t have to pay higher taxes!

If you’re ready to explore a great new above ground pool, we’re ready to install one for you! Read a bit more about our swimming pool installation services, and give us a call to prepare yours today!

Why a Hot Tub is a Great Addition to Your Backyard

Do you have a space to fill in your backyard? Perhaps your pool area is looking anything but complete, or maybe you need an addition to bring your lackluster outdoor space to life. A hot tub might just be the perfect solution!

There are many benefits to owning a hot tub in Fort Smith; while it’s obvious that they’re the only aquatic pastime you can comfortably enjoy outdoors throughout the entire year, there are even more benefits to them. When the nights are cool and the seasons get cold, there is no better place to spend your time than your very own spa. Here is why a hot tub is a great addition to your backyard.

Relax

It is no secret that soaking in the bubbly, warm water of a hot tub is one of the most relaxing daily breaks that you can take, making it the perfect way to relieve both your physical and mental stress. So if you find yourself feeling a bit uptight, simply take a dip in the inviting waters of your hot tub and feel your troubles begin to wash away in comforting warmth.

Be Healthy

Some people are not aware that owning a hot tub can actually improve your health. Sitting in the warm water and using the comfortable massaging jets promotes good circulation and prompts toxins to leave your body via your sweat glands. The rush of fresh oxygen and nutrients that circulates through your body will promote healing as well as stimulate regeneration. This means you can literally feel like a new you while you do nothing but sit and enjoy the warm water!

Have an Oasis

Having a hot tub or a custom spa in Fort Smith will bring new life to your backyard. Not only are they great for you to relax in as well as feel healthy and like new, but they make a beautiful addition that your guests will appreciate, and you will admire this great addition to your backyard each time you step outside and behold your own personal oasis.

Hot Springs Super Sale

March 11 through April 11, take advantage of Hot Springs’ amazing financing event. You can enjoy zero percent APR for 36 months on select models. If you would like more information on adding a hot tub to your backyard with this exclusive deal, visit our hot tubs page or contact a representative with Burton Pools today.

Debunking Common Myths about Pool Ownership

Are you thinking about buying a pool? It seems that when you are considering it, everyone wants to give you some sage advice about being a pool owner. Truth is, much of the "common knowledge" about pool ownership is a pure myth. Here are some of the more common ones and why they simply aren't true.

Installing a Pool Will Ruin Your Yard

Having a pool installed is a construction project. This means that there is going to be heavy equipment and construction workers getting the job done. While there will be some damage to your yard, professionals at Burton Pools will keep it to a minimum and can help you get your yard looking great again in no time at all.

Owning a Pool Increases Utilities

The pumps, heaters and lights that make up a great Fort Smith pool will take some energy to do so. Depending on how much you use your pool, you may see some increase in those bills. When you compare the cost of these rising bills, as well as the pool chemicals, with the cost of a boat or an RV, you will find it much cheaper to own a swimming pool. It's especially cheaper when you consider how much time you have to spend in the pool!

Pools Make It Hard to Sell Your Home

Many people insist that a pool makes your home more difficult to sell in the event you need to move. This is simply untrue. Realtors and banks look at pools as a home improvement that adds value to your home, not takes it away. Many buyers will seek out homes that have pools exclusively. Having a pool will add value in the long run and make your home more attractive to those seeing one with a pool.

Pools Take a lot of Time to Maintain

Depending on how heavily you use your pool, you can expect to spend an hour or two a week maintaining it. This includes cleaning, inspection of the mechanicals and balancing the pool chemistry. Pools can take a lot of maintenance time if you neglect them and don't keep up on the maintenance, just like anything else in your home. Spending a couple hours a week doing a little upkeep will ensure that your pool is ready for you and your family to enjoy.

Pools Are Dangerous

A pool is a fun way for families and friends to relax and have fun. As with anything some rules and responsibility are needed to prevent accidents. Lay the ground rules and stick to them for everyone at the pool, and you should have no problem creating a safe environment to relax and enjoy.

The Benefits and Top Features of a Vinyl In-Ground Pool

Though the air still has a cold bite to it, many of us are daydreaming about the upcoming, warm summer days and splashing around in a refreshing swimming pool. Why can't this daydream become your reality this year? When your Arkansas pool builder installs a vinyl in-ground pool into your backyard, you will immediately notice the benefits of owning such a structure. Everything from the level of maintenance to the sheer aesthetics of the space will change for the better, all while you enjoy swimming in your beautifully constructed pool.

The Structure of Your Vinyl In-Ground Pool

Vinyl in-ground pools are built to last you a lifetime while still offering low-maintenance care solutions. We know these pools are ultra-durable because they are backed by the support of a Graphex system, which is made with rust-preventative walls and braces, a cement-mix and honeycomb-patterned walls for engineered strength. For the cherry on top, vinyl in-ground pools are lined with, you guessed it, dependable and gorgeous vinyl.

Ways You Can Transform Your Pool

Now that we've got the basics down, you're probably wondering how you can transform this special pool into the ultimate watery oasis. Coming in a number of shapes and sizes, you can choose or customize the pool pattern that best suits the style of your home and area of your yard.

Whether you prefer the more symmetrical modern style, or something a little more unique and funky, you can work with your Arkansas pool builder to create the pool that's perfect for you. This pool can be personalized even further with special features such as breathtaking waterfalls, infinity edges and dazzling tile borders.

What Makes Burton Pools Different?

Remember that Graphex support we mentioned earlier? That's what makes Burton Pools vinyl in-ground pools different from the competitors. Instead of using a steel-based support, we use Graphex to prevent the development of rust on your pool's structure.

Because we incorporate Graphex into the build of our vinyl in-ground pools, it creates a unique hybrid pool that makes for a stronger structure when combined with a vinyl liner. These pools are great for salt water systems, which is not something you could say for a pool that is built with rust-prone steel. Not only are these pools among the most durable in the industry, but you can also enjoy the perks of owning a salt water pool.

Benefits of Salt Water Pools

If you've never considered installing a salt water pool into your Arkansas backyard, you should! Typically, these pools are easier to maintain, as the salt-generated chlorine and installed in-floor cleaning systems keep the space cleaner than your average pool, all without you having to do the extra work. In fact, with maintenance services from your Arkansas pool professionals, your pool will be in tip-top shape and look fantastic, all without you having to lift a finger.

In addition to salt water pools looking cleaner, they are also continuously self-disinfecting, which can make the pool healthier for swimming in. In fact, some swimmers have found that their eyes and skin are less irritated by swimming in a salt water pool as opposed to a classic, chlorine pool. You can enjoy your pool with the luxury of a worry-free mind, all thanks to your salt water system.

Build Your Dream Backyard Today

Here at Burton Pools, we are currently offering a special for our Pacific Graphex Salt Water Pools. For just $29,950, you can have one of these beautiful, durable and low-maintenance pools built right into your yard by your Arkansas pool builder team.

You can choose from our whistle shape, 17- by 33-foot pools or our 15- by 30-foot Omni; it's your choice. Both come with amazing and convenient inclusions you are sure to enjoy. With the addition of those special water features we mentioned earlier, you can transform this swimming pool into the extreme water wonderland.
